On Letter Writing…
- What does ‘letter writing’ or “epistorlary practices” mean to you?
- To me, ‘letter writing’ or “epistolary practices” is simply the art of documenting in a ‘non-biographical’ way. There’s no intentional outline to a person’s life, just documentation of the day (if a diary) or what’s been happening (if a letter). No intentional plot or story, but it seems to form one anyway, or the reader can put together strands of details to create an outline of events and feelings.
- What are you excited about in this course?
- For this course, I’m excited more about getting to practice “epistorlary practices”. I’ve always enjoyed creative writing where I get to let my thoughts flow more over analytical works. Additionally, during my last semester of high school, I did a memoir class and that was honestly the most fun I’ve had in a while. While I understand we will probably be doing more analytic writing, I cant help but look forward to those which are not.
- What concerns do you have about this course?
- Concerns? Like most English/writing classes, I’m concerned most about my motivation. I find a lot of school provided literature ‘boring’ and usually not of my taste, making it harder to read. Likewise, when I don’t feel interested in writing something, it’s harder to start of course. Unlike other classes where it may be easier to at least start to skirt around, there’s no saving it in writing.
My Writing Process
- what do you like most about your writing process?
- I think I like coming up with ideas/brainstorming. What makes me feel extremely satisfied is when these ideas actually go out from my brain and onto paper relatively similar to my original thought or better. When the writing actually starts flowing and I don’t have to force myself to make sentences? That’s the best part of the process. I compare it to my artwork, the idea draft and sketching is my favorite part, while lineart is the bane of my existence. Though when I start dropping the colors in, everything seems to flow.
- What would you most like to improve about your writing?
- I think I’d like to improve the flow of writing specifically in analytical pieces, since in my opinion, they typically sound choppy, especially transitions.
- How do you hope to grow as a writer?
- I hope to grow in adding different variations and writing styles to my repertoire/creative toolbox for future use.
