So, once again I am sitting at a desk and questioning my life choices (for once, it’s in a classroom instead of at home or my dorm room).
I came into college with the expectation to double major. I don’t even know where that expectation came from honestly- I used to think you go to college for one thing, but during my senior year of high school, everyone was listing a major and a minor , or 2 majors. One of my friends told me “you’re paying 4 years to be in debt, you may as well major in 2 thinks to make your money worth while”. And I’ve always been money conscious, I don’t think I’d have the opportunity to go back to college for another degree. So in that way, I guess it makes sense that you’d take 2 possible majors. I think it’s also a result of the unstable economy and job market: how expectations of perfection are piled up even more on this generation. We always have to do more. Thus have backup plans with majors that can get you everywhere.
So I chose sociology and theater. 1, because I grew to like theater in the past years of high school (musical theater specifically), and 2, I remember doing an interest/career quiz back in sophomore year. With my top careers being New Broadcaster, Actor, Social worker and interior designer- well I settled on social worker. I’ve always wanted to help people, though my idea of social work was specifically focused on ‘case management’. Through going to counseling every once in a while, I learned that well- most counselors have a Masters in Social Work. So- that may be another career option.
However comes the major problem again. I have too many ideas. While sociology has stayed constant, I’ve considered changing the theater degree. Through getting a good optometrist and going to vision therapy after a double concussion, I’ve considered optometry. Though- that is a lot of school, I’ve never considered a pre-med track at all. But here I am again, considering bio and neuroscience. Alas, college is a time for exploration right?
